Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced the Government’s intention to construct new technical universities as part of a broader strategy to widen access to tertiary education across the country.
Addressing journalists during a media engagement on the 2026 education budget, the Minister revealed that the plan initially proposed siting technical universities in Jasikan in the Oti Region, Techiman in the Bono East Region, and Damango in the Savannah Region.
However, he clarified that Damango will instead host a University of Science and Technology, while the two technical universities will now be allocated to Jasikan and Techiman.
"We want to establish two new technical universities in Jasikan, Techiman, and Damango. But now, Damango is getting the University of Science and Technology, so I may have to decide by the consultation of the president," he said at the engagement on Wednesday in Accra, GTEC office.
"Now that they (Damango) have Science and Technology university, maybe I will shift focus to do Jasikan and Techiman and still give Damango the Science and Technology University," the minister explained.
Mr Iddrisu explained that the initiative aligns with President John Mahama's administration’s commitment to bringing tertiary education closer to underserved communities, strengthening technical capacity, and equipping young people with the practical skills required for national development.
"The president desires that every region have a dedicated institution of higher learning," he said.
