Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has accused former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta of deliberately evading accountability as attempts by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to extradite him from the United States continue.
The OSP has been working to have Mr Ofori-Atta returned to Ghana to stand trial, but the former minister has cited medical treatment abroad as the reason for his prolonged absence.
Speaking during a Q&A session on X Space on Sunday, November 23, Mr Fuseini challenged the former minister to come back to Ghana if he believes he has no case to answer.
“Ofori-Atta is running away from accountability. He’s running away from the law. If he has nothing to hide, what prevents him from coming to Ghana? Ofori-Atta has brought this upon himself,” he said.
He dismissed suggestions that the OSP should have barred Mr Ofori-Atta from travelling in the first place.
“On what conduct was the OSP going to prevent Ken Ofori-Atta from travelling after he had sought permission from the then Chief of Staff [Frema Osei-Opare] to seek medical attention when he was to assist in the investigation and not under investigation? Why blame the OSP for not completing its mandate?” he questioned.
Meanwhile, the OSP has announced that eight individuals—including Mr Ofori-Atta—are scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, November 24, over their alleged roles in the Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) revenue assurance contracts.
The Special Prosecutor has filed 78 charges against the former minister and seven others in connection with the controversial agreements between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited.
