The Bekwai Circuit Court has sentenced a 23-year-old commercial motorbike rider, Baffour Kwakye, to 10 years’ imprisonment for sexually assaulting a five-year-old boy at Manso Nkwanta in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.
The conviction followed his guilty plea after the trial had already begun.
According to the prosecution, led by Detective Chief Inspector Eric Twum, the victim, a Class One pupil, lived in the same neighbourhood as the accused.
On 6 May 2025, Kwakye sent the child on an errand and later lured him into his room under the pretext of watching video content on his phone. It was there that the offence occurred.
The child informed his mother, Akosua Kisiwaa, who reported the matter to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) at Manso Nkwanta.
A subsequent medical examination confirmed the abuse, leading police to intensify their search for Kwakye.
He was eventually arrested on 20 July 2025 at Manso Nkran in connection with an unrelated theft case. Upon learning of the outstanding defilement report, the police there handed him over to the authorities at Manso Nkwanta.
Kwakye later admitted the offence in his caution statement.
Presiding Judge Honour Isaac Appietu sentenced him to 120 months’ imprisonment after concluding the trial.
