Private legal practitioner Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu says the arrest and detention of lawyer and activist Martin Kpebu by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has left a stain on the professional record of the Special Prosecutor.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, December 3, Mr Adawudu said the conduct of the OSP raises troubling questions about the exercise of power and the treatment of citizens who appear before the institution.
He argued that the circumstances surrounding Mr Kpebu’s arrest were unacceptable and damaging.
“That is his constitutional right he has exercised. And once the man is leaving your office, you come, and the policeman says that he is obstructing officials, and you charge him under the OSP Act, and you come and say that I don’t have a hand in it, and that it is the policeman.
"On whose authority did the policemen find on your premises or within the precinct of your office? It is a clear blot on his career. It is unfortunate.”
Mr Adawudu questioned how officers stationed at the OSP could act without the authority of the Special Prosecutor.
He maintained that the attempt to distance the OSP from the actions of the police lacked credibility and deepened public doubts about the institution’s fairness.
His comments follow the arrest of Mr Kpebu, who was reportedly picked up for allegedly obstructing an OSP officer after responding to an invitation on Wednesday, December 3.
He was later detained and granted bail, with conditions requiring him to provide one surety and show landed property in his name.
Mr Adawudu said the incident should never have happened and insisted it has done significant harm to the image of the Special Prosecutor.
He described the development as troubling and insisted that the actions taken were unjustifiable.
