Director of Strategy, Research and Communications at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Sammy Darko, has alleged that private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu verbally abused security officers at the OSP.
This was before his arrest on Wednesday, December 3.
According to Mr Darko, the confrontation began when security personnel reminded Mr Kpebu that filming and photography were not permitted around the OSP premises.
He claims the lawyer reacted angrily, insulted the officers, and made disparaging remarks about their superior, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.
“Mr Kpebu told the guards they were nobodies and even their boss, the head of the agency, is a nobody who will be removed soon,” Mr Darko alleged in a statement clarifying the events leading to the arrest.
He said the OSP recorded the exchange due to what he described as a pattern of misrepresentation by the lawyer following previous encounters with security personnel.
Mr Darko insisted the arrest was lawful and was carried out without force after Mr Kpebu allegedly continued obstructing the guards in the discharge of their duties.
He further rejected suggestions that the arrest was linked to the allegations of corruption Mr Kpebu has made against the Special Prosecutor, stressing that the inquiry into those claims remains separate.
“This was not a trap or an attempt to silence anyone. It was simply an enforcement of the law. No one is above basic security protocols,” he said.
Mr Kpebu was later granted bail and directed to return to the OSP for further investigation into the alleged obstruction of justice.
A different date, the OSP says, will be announced for the continuation of the inquiry into his corruption allegations.
