A Specialist Family Physician at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has urged young Ghanaians to practice safe sex, citing a rise in HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) across the country.
Dr Kofi Frimpong Oppong, who is also the Medical Director of FamCare Clinic, made the call while speaking at a free medical screening event at the Kumasi City Mall on December 2, 2025.

He stressed that condom use remains a vital and cost-effective tool in preventing HIV and STIs.
“ I strongly urge the youth to heed this advice, adopt responsible habits, and grow into maturity, eventually settling with one partner,” Dr Oppong said, warning against casual, unprotected sex, sexual promiscuity, and illicit drug use.
The screening event, organised by FamCare Clinic, offered residents of Asokwa and mall shoppers free health checks, including malaria tests, blood sugar and blood pressure measurements, body mass index (BMI) assessment, and Hepatitis B screening.
Patrons also received counselling, medical prescriptions, and refreshments.
Dr Oppong explained that the initiative was designed to give residents a proactive opportunity to assess their health. “It was specifically designed to provide an opportunity for residents in the Asokwa area, particularly shoppers at the City Mall, to assess their health conditions,” he said.
Participants lauded the free medical checks and health advice. One young woman noted, “We appreciate the free checks and the honest talk. It makes us feel cared for and gives us the information we need.”
The initiative comes amid growing concern over HIV prevalence in the Ashanti Region, highlighting the need for continued public health education and preventive measures.
