The Member of Parliament for Akrofuom, Joseph Azumah, has announced plans to file a formal petition to the Speaker of Parliament following violent scenes during proceedings on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
Speaking on Nhyria FM’s “Kro Yi Mu Nsem,” Azumah, who spoke with Barima Kofi Dawson (Akokoa), said the petition, supported by two other lawmakers, seeks a full-scale investigation into the chaos that saw some MPs hurling objects toward the Speaker’s chair.
“What we witnessed was not only a disruption of order but a direct affront to the very institution we serve,” he said, describing the actions as a blatant violation of parliamentary standing orders.
Azumah warned that the escalation of tensions, if left unchecked, could eventually lead to more severe confrontations on the parliamentary floor, a scenario he called “disastrous” for Ghana’s democracy.
He noted that the incident has embarrassed lawmakers at a time when Ghanaians expect maturity and leadership from their representatives. “Our society looks up to us, and we are mentors to many of our youth. When we descend into chaos, it sends the wrong message and erodes the trust placed in us,” he added.
The Akrofuom MP emphasized the need for decisive action to protect the integrity and public image of Parliament, urging colleagues to reflect and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
This latest incident comes amid heightened tensions in Parliament, following disputes over the Kpandai parliamentary seat and other contentious legislative matters. Lawmakers and civil society actors have repeatedly called for decorum and accountability within the legislative chamber to uphold democratic norms.
Azumah’s petition is expected to formally request that the identities of those involved be publicly disclosed and appropriate sanctions applied in accordance with parliamentary rules.
