The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has announced a nationwide compliance exercise set to commence on 18th December 2025, aimed at ensuring that every vehicle on Ghana’s roads is equipped with a functional and easily accessible fire extinguisher.
The exercise will be spearheaded by the GNFS Fire Safety Compliance Taskforce in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.
GNFS noted this in a press statement issued on December 16.
The taskforce will conduct on-the-spot safety checks, issue GNFS certification tags, and provide technical guidance on proper fire extinguisher use in line with the Ghana National Fire Service Act, 1997 (Act 537).
Speaking on the initiative, a GNFS spokesperson emphasised, “Vehicle owners and drivers must ensure that their fire extinguishers are serviceable, securely mounted, and GNFS-certified. The safety of road users is our top priority.”

The GNFS will also engage transport unions and associations across the country to raise awareness about the exercise.
Drivers are being urged to carry at least one certified extinguisher, check pressure gauges and expiry dates, and maintain other essential safety items such as warning triangles and first-aid kits.
This nationwide initiative reflects the GNFS’s commitment to enhancing road safety and ensuring that vehicles are adequately prepared to handle potential fire emergencies.
