A massive fire has broken out at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange enclave, one of Accra's busiest commercial hubs, destroying several shops and properties.
The inferno, which reportedly started in the early hours of this evening, has sent thick plumes of black smoke into the atmosphere, visible from several kilometres away.
Officers from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) are currently on the ground, deployed in a high-stakes operation to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby high-rise buildings and residential structures.
At least four fire engines are currently stationed at strategic points around the blaze.
The atmosphere at the scene is currently one of panic and urgency as shop owners and traders scramble to salvage whatever remains of their wares.
The affected area, known for its dense concentration of electronic shops, clothing boutiques, and street vendors, has been cordoned off to allow firefighting tenders easy access.
Eyewitnesses report that the fire spread rapidly due to the highly combustible materials stored in many of the shops.
"We just saw smoke coming from one of the containers, and within minutes, the whole line was on fire," one distraught trader shared. "The wind made it worse, and before we knew it, the fire had jumped to the next building."
While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, fire officials have urged the public to stay clear of the area to avoid casualties from collapsing structures or smoke inhalation.
