The Ghana Police Service’s Special Operations Team has arrested 12 people in Tamale for suspected involvement in drug peddling and abuse.
The suspects were apprehended during a sweep operation at Aboabo Forest and subsequent patrols in the Salamba and Sakasaka areas. Items retrieved from them included dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and opioids, including Tramadol.
The operation, which was led by DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil, formed part of efforts to maintain law and order in Tamale during the New Year period.
In a statement signed by DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil, he said the strong security presence deterred criminal activities and enhanced public confidence.
He indicated that the team would continue to conduct swoops on criminal hideouts in the area to curb crime.
He also assured residents that they could breathe a sigh of relief, as the Police Service continues to intensify its crackdown on criminal activities in the metropolis.
He further assured citizens of their safety, stating that the police are working tirelessly to ensure peace and security.
According to him, the police have been conducting night patrols and swoops, leading to the arrest of suspects involved in various crimes, including drug peddling and abuse.
The police have appealed to the public to report any suspicious activities, assuring them of a swift response to keep communities safe.
The suspects are currently in police custody, and investigations are ongoing.
