Residents of Cape Coast and surrounding communities in the Central Region will experience a planned power outage on January 8, 2026, as engineers replace a major transformer at the Cape Coast Substation.
The interruption, scheduled from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., is part of efforts to improve electricity supply reliability in the area.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and the Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo), the outage will allow engineers to replace the existing 33MVA transformer with a new 66MVA transformer at the substation.

The upgrade is expected to significantly increase the capacity of the facility and support growing demand in Cape Coast and its environs.
Spokesperson and Head of Communication at the Ministry, Richmond Rockson, said the project forms part of the government’s broader agenda to strengthen Ghana’s power transmission network.
“This critical upgrade will enhance the substation’s capacity, enable more households and businesses to connect to the national grid, and improve the quality, reliability, and stability of power supply,” he stated.
He further assured residents that all necessary measures have been put in place to ensure the work is completed within the scheduled timeframe.
“GRIDCo engineers, working under the strict supervision of the Ministry, are fully prepared to execute the replacement efficiently so power can be restored as quickly as possible,” Mr Rockson added.
While acknowledging the inconvenience the outage may cause, the Ministry and GRIDCo appealed for public cooperation.
“We regret the disruption this planned outage may cause, but we assure the public of our continued commitment to national development through reliable and improved power delivery,” the statement concluded.
