Former Sekondi Member of Parliament, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has expressed confidence that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will achieve a decisive victory in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) forthcoming presidential primaries.
According to Mr Mercer, Dr Bawumia is poised to secure more than 65 per cent of the total votes when party delegates go to the polls on 31 January 2026, citing what he described as growing support from both grassroots members and key stakeholders across the party.
His remarks come in the wake of a public endorsement by 118 former NPP parliamentary candidates from the 2024 general election, who have declared their support for Dr Bawumia ahead of the primaries.
Speaking on Ekosii Sen on Asempa FM on Thursday, 8 January 2026, Mr Mercer stated that he would be “shocked” if the former Vice President failed to surpass the 65 per cent mark.
“I will be very surprised if Dr Bawumia does not get more than 65 per cent of the votes in the primaries,” he said.
He explained that the endorsement by the former parliamentary candidates was the result of a careful assessment of all the aspirants contesting the party’s flagbearership.
“We evaluated what Ghanaians are looking for in a leader at this point, and Dr Bawumia clearly meets and exceeds those expectations,” he added.
Earlier on Thursday, the 118 former NPP parliamentary candidates publicly declared their support for Dr Bawumia ahead of the party’s 2028 presidential race, describing him as the most prepared and electable candidate.
The group said their endorsement was based on Dr Bawumia’s experience, competence, vision, and leadership qualities, insisting that none of the other flagbearer hopefuls matched his credentials.
