The Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA) has announced that Ghana’s capital, Accra, will host the prestigious 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship from April 29 to May 3, 2026.
The announcement, which has been warmly welcomed by the global armwrestling community, affirms Ghana’s status as a major hub and the continent’s epicentre for the sport.
Approximately 450 armwrestlers from more than 22 African countries are expected to converge in Accra to battle for continental supremacy in a showcase of power, passion, and pride.
Crucially, the 2026 championship will serve as the official and primary qualification event for armwrestling at the 2027 African Games. Top athletes from across the continent will therefore compete not only for medals, but also for the coveted qualification slots for the Games.
With qualification on the line, the stakes are expected to be extremely high, setting the stage for intense and tactical contests. Ghana’s “Golden Arms” will seek to defend their continental legacy on home soil against traditional rivals Egypt and Nigeria, as well as emerging challengers from Benin and Cameroon.
President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) and the Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), Mr Charles Osei Asibey, has assured stakeholders of a world-class championship.
He said the organisers are committed to delivering an outstanding event that will showcase Ghanaian hospitality and organisational excellence, while providing a competitive platform for Africa’s finest armwrestlers to secure qualification for the 2027 African Games.
Mr Osei Asibey also invited the Ghanaian public to turn out in large numbers to witness the raw power, skill, and determination of the continent’s strongest athletes.
With the championship now confirmed for April 2026, the countdown begins for what promises to be the ultimate test of strength and endurance, as armwrestlers from across Africa demonstrate their ability to perform under pressure.
Africa is coming, and Accra is ready to crown new continental champions and determine the qualifiers for the 2027 African Games.
