The Central Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has strongly condemned a violent assault at the Akoti Health Centre in the Assin Fosu District, describing the incident as a grave threat to the safety of health workers, patients, and the integrity of healthcare delivery.

In a statement issued on January 15, 2026, the Directorate said the attack occurred on Sunday, January 11, while health workers were providing emergency medical care at the facility.

According to the statement, two injured persons were brought to the health centre from Assin Wurakese following an alleged assault. During the course of treatment, the alleged assailant also arrived at the facility seeking medical attention.

The situation escalated when a group of individuals reportedly stormed the health centre, wielding offensive weapons, and violently attacked the alleged assailant within the premises.

The Directorate said the incident unfolded in the presence of health workers, patients, and visitors, triggering panic and posing a serious risk to lives, property, and the sanctity of the health facility.

The Regional Health Directorate said the Ghana Police Service has been formally notified and urged to take immediate steps to investigate the incident and apprehend all perpetrators involved.

It has also called for increased police visibility and enhanced security support at the Akoti Health Centre to prevent a recurrence.

“These measures are critical to restoring confidence among health workers and ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of essential health services without fear or intimidation,” the statement stressed.

The Directorate reaffirmed that health facilities are neutral and protected spaces dedicated to the preservation of life, and warned that any form of violence against clients or health workers is unacceptable and undermines the effective functioning of the healthcare system.

It further assured the public of its commitment to the safety and well-being of health workers, patients, and visitors across all health facilities in the Central Region, pledging continued collaboration with security agencies and other stakeholders to maintain peace, order, and safety.
