The internal crisis within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has deepened as party stalwart Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy publicly condemned the move to expel staunch member Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, describing the disciplinary process as a "flawed and opaque" exercise in selective justice.
The former flagbearer aspirant raised serious questions about the procedural integrity and suddenness of the party's decision to trigger expulsion proceedings against the renowned heart surgeon.
Professor Frimpong-Boateng had labelled the party's leadership as "fake" and called for an overhaul to revive the party.
However, the party decided to trigger disciplinary measures that could lead to his expulsion from the party.
Dr. Kennedy highlighted what he described as suspicious timing in the party's communication over the matter.
The NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, issued a statement on Tuesday, January 13, labelling the professor's recent comments as reprehensible and inimical to the party’s values.
“The process seems dubious. The announcement came late at night, and by the next morning, a statement had been issued. When exactly did the national executives meet to decide whether the professor should be referred to the disciplinary committee?” Dr. Kennedy asked in an interview on Channel One TV on Saturday, January 17, 2026,
Central to Dr. Kennedy’s critique is the perceived inconsistency in how the NPP enforces discipline.
He pointed to other high-profile figures, such as Kennedy Agyapong and the Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe (Abronye), who have levelled sharp criticisms against the party leadership in the past without facing the threat of expulsion.
“We need to ask ourselves why some voices are targeted while others are not,” Dr. Kennedy remarked, warning that selective enforcement threatens the party’s moral credibility.
The disciplinary firestorm began after Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s appearance on The Point of View on Monday, January 12.
In a candid interview with Bernard Avle, the former Environment Minister declared that the current NPP had become "fake" and was no longer the party he once helped build.
He further alleged that the 2023 presidential primary was marred by arm-twisting and bribery—claims the NPP leadership has "unequivocally rejected" as baseless.
Dr. Kennedy argued that instead of attacking the professor’s character, the NPP should reflect on the "fundamental issues" he raised regarding corruption and the party’s perceived departure from its founding principles.
“If the professor used strong words, it was to underline that the party is on the wrong path. The focus should be on the issues, not attacking his person,” Dr. Kennedy added.
While the NPP Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, has accused the professor of contributing to the party's 2024 election loss, constitutional experts like Sammy Crabbe have warned that the party cannot legally expel him without a fair hearing, as doing so would validate the very "fake" label the professor used.
