Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has called on delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to elect a presidential candidate who can attract support not only within the party but also from undecided voters across the country.
Mr Jinapor, who is a member of the campaign team of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, stressed that the party’s next flagbearer must be viewed by the broader Ghanaian electorate as credible presidential material, rather than merely the enthusiasm of party loyalists.
According to him, winning national elections requires appealing to ordinary Ghanaians who do not identify strongly with either the NPP or the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and whose votes often determine electoral outcomes.
“If we elect someone who is seen by the generality of Ghanaians—not only NPP supporters or hardcore party faithful, and not even by those firmly opposed to us—but by the average Ghanaian as someone capable of being President, then we stand a stronger chance,” he stated in an interview with Channel One TV.
Mr Jinapor added that the ideal candidate must demonstrate credibility, experience and a clear vision for the country, while possessing the capacity to manage the immense responsibilities of the presidency.
He noted that even with these qualities, winning the confidence of the non-aligned electorate would remain a demanding task, but one the party must be prepared to undertake.
“If we elect somebody who is seen by the generality of the Ghanaian population, not just NPP supporters, not just NPP hard core supporters or not by hard core NDC supporters who may be opposed but the average everyday Ghanaian who is not particularly aligned to any political party will see this person as somebody who can be elected to become president of Ghana,” Mr Jinapor said.
