The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally congratulated former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on his commanding victory in the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, expressing confidence in the party’s prospects ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Dr Bawumia secured 56.48 per cent of the valid votes cast in the primary to clinch the NPP’s flagbearer position for the 2028 polls.
His closest challenger, former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, finished second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 per cent of the total.
In a statement issued on January 31 and signed by the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party endorsed the outcome of the election and pledged its full backing to Dr Bawumia’s candidature.
“The party congratulates Dr. Bawumia on his emphatic victory and wishes him well as he leads the NPP into the 2028 General Elections,” the statement said.
The NPP also praised the conduct of the primary, commending all five contenders—Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong—for their adherence to democratic values and the sense of maturity demonstrated throughout the process.
Additionally, the party expressed gratitude to the Presidential Elections Committee, chaired by Joseph Osei Owusu, as well as the Electoral Commission, the Ghana Police Service, the media and party delegates, for their roles in ensuring a peaceful, transparent and credible election.
As it turns its attention to the 2028 general elections, the NPP stressed the need for unity and collective effort, calling on members and supporters to close ranks behind its flagbearer.
“As the contest has now concluded, the NPP calls on all members and supporters to unite, reconcile, and rally behind our elected flagbearer in the supreme interest of the Party. United in purpose, the NPP will work tirelessly to secure victory in the next general elections. The elephant is the winning symbol, and by the grace of God, we shall prevail,” the statement added.
