Mahamadu Gariba Kirror, a suspected highway robber, has been shot dead by the Police.
A police brief on Monday said Kirror was alleged to be a member of a robbery gang that shot and killed a mini-van driver and a passenger during an attack on commuters along the Atebubu–Yeji Highway on January 29, 2026.
It said Kirror was arrested two days later, on January 31, at about 1030 hours, based on intelligence.
A search conducted on him revealed a locally manufactured pistol, two live BB cartridges, a Samsung Galaxy A07 mobile phone, two keypad mobile phones and a talisman.
Investigations established that the Samsung Galaxy A07 belonged to Ms Nadia Haruna, a resident of Yeji, who identified it as one of the items taken from her during the robbery.
According to the Police brief, the robbery occurred at about 2215 hours on January 29, when a mini-van with registration number AS-6444-14 conveying passengers along the Atebubu–Yeji stretch was attacked.
The driver of the vehicle and a passenger, Hafisa Owusu Haruna, were shot and killed.
During interrogation, Kirror reportedly admitted his involvement in the robbery and mentioned Umaru, Issifu, Furgur, Ibrahim, Shaibu and Yelow as his accomplices.
On February 1, 2026, at about 1945 hours, Kirror led a team of Police officers to a nearby bush in the Atebubu Municipality to arrest the accomplices.
However, as they neared the hideout, Kirror advised the police to use a footpath to the location, but then suddenly attempted to escape into a nearby forest.
“The team fired shots to maim him, during which he sustained gunshot injuries,” the brief said.
“He was rushed to the Atebubu Government Hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead by the medical officer on duty.”
“The body has been deposited at the Atebubu Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.”
Meanwhile, the police said efforts were underway to arrest the remaining accomplices mentioned by the deceased suspect.
