The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has assured the public that steps will be taken to strengthen security systems at health facilities following the theft of a baby from the Mamprobi Polyclinic in Accra.
“We are going to work with the Ministry of Health to ensure that the systems and structures we have in place are secure enough for patients and health workers,” she stated, emphasising the need for enhanced safeguards to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The baby, who was reportedly stolen from the facility on February 18 in the Ablekuma South Constituency, has since been safely recovered following a swift operation by the Ghana Police Service. A female suspect is currently in custody, assisting with investigations.
The incident prompted an immediate response from the police after hospital authorities and the child’s family reported the matter.
Officers launched a search operation, which led to the safe rescue of the infant. Authorities have yet to disclose the suspect's identity as investigations continue.
Officials say enquiries are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the suspect allegedly gained access to the child.
The Gender Minister has reiterated its commitment to collaborating with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to reinforce security protocols and protect vulnerable patients across the country.
