The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adje, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two Turkish infrastructure companies to begin the preliminary and detailed engineering designs for a major water treatment plant to serve communities in the eastern part of Accra.
The agreement was concluded with Koçak Çevre and Hacıoğlu Holding A.Ş, both of which have extensive experience in the development of water supply and large-scale infrastructure systems.
The partnership will see the two firms collaborate on the technical design of the proposed facility.
Under the arrangement, the companies will undertake both preliminary assessments and detailed engineering designs for a water treatment plant expected to produce about 300,000 cubic metres of treated water per day.
The project is aimed at strengthening water supply capacity in rapidly expanding communities within the eastern corridor of the capital.
Speaking on the initiative, the Minister described the collaboration as an important step towards addressing rising demand for potable water in the Greater Accra Region.
He noted that continued urban growth and population increases have placed significant pressure on existing water infrastructure.
When completed, the treatment plant is expected to improve the reliability of water supply, extend service coverage and enhance long-term water security for residents in the eastern zones of the capital.
The MoU signals the start of the project’s technical planning stage and lays the groundwork for full-scale development and eventual construction of the facility.
