Police in the Sissala East Municipality have launched a manhunt for two unidentified masked gunmen who allegedly shot and killed a Fulbe herdsman in a suspected targeted attack near Wellembelle.
ASP Adusei Poku, the Sissala East Police Commander, told the GNA that the incident occurred on Tuesday, March 25, 2026, at night.
He said the police received a report from a resident, indicating that his herdsman, identified as Alidu Sallam, had been shot without provocation.
He said, Police officers from Wellembelle swiftly proceeded to the scene, located approximately 10 kilometres from the town, where they discovered the lifeless body of the victim, believed to be in his early 30s.
The deceased was found lying in a hut, covered in blood, with a gunshot wound to his upper right thigh.
Preliminary investigations at the scene revealed a BB cartridge nearby.
Bloodstain patterns suggested that the attackers, who were armed and riding an unregistered black Aloba apsonic motorbike, had transported the victim to the back of the hut, where he was shot before they fled the area.
The body was conveyed to the Wellembelle Polyclinic, where he was pronounced dead by Dr Luke Binnebamile Kyengbe.
It was subsequently released to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic traditions.
Police say efforts were underway to identify and apprehend the suspects. Authorities are urging members of the public with relevant information to come forward to assist with ongoing investigations.
The motive behind the attack remains unknown.
The Assembly member for the Welembelle electoral area, Jonas Dimah Batong, said, “It is sad and heartbreaking. The community is ready to support the police to ensure the criminals are arrested”.
