Economist and Professor of Finance Godfred Bokpin has questioned the quality of road infrastructure being delivered in Ghana.
He argues that the country’s forefathers constructed more durable roads despite having less access to formal education and technical expertise.
He said the situation was worrying at a time when Ghana had made significant progress in education, technology and professional development.
According to Prof Bokpin, the contrast between the quality of infrastructure delivered by previous generations and the current state of many roads raises questions about how the country is applying its accumulated knowledge and expertise to national development.
He lamented that despite the advancement in education and the availability of highly trained professionals, Ghana continues to struggle with maintaining durable road infrastructure.
"With more education and experience, we are building less durable roads than our forefathers did. How did we get here? Who taught us this? Is it fair to submit to you that in this country, if certain roads are commissioned and you don't hurry up and go and use them by the time it gets to your turn, it will not be there?" he bemoaned.
On the ongoing rehabilitation work on the Tema-Accra motorway, he said, "I have been trying to understand how long it took Dr Kwame Nkrumah to complete the Tema-Accra motorway, and that the revision on that road has taken us this long."
Prof Bokpin said the country needed to critically examine its approach to infrastructure development and ensure that the knowledge and expertise available today translated into quality and sustainable projects.
He made the remarks at a public lecture organised by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service on Tuesday, August 11, on the theme: “The Resetting Agenda for Sustainable Development in Ghana: The Civil Service’s Responsibilities.”
