Item III, an Accra-based event organising company, has announced its intention to establish a national film awards scheme, the first of which is scheduled to come off on November 14. There has not been any awards programme dedicated to Ghanaian cinema for a while now. That was why, according to the management of Item III, the company had decided to re-institute a scheme to honour talents in the movie industry here. The first event is scheduled to come off with a red carpet gala night on November 14 at the Accra International Conference Centre on the theme: A Vibrant Movie Industry, A Happy and Enlightened People. Item III sources indicate that some top players in the movie business across the continent are expected to attend the event. “The awards programme is to help nurture the growth of non-fiction filmmaking, encourage the exploration of innovative storytelling and also promote and give new lease of life to the Ghana movie industry,” an Item III statement issued after a press soiree last week to announce the awards, stated. “It would also create a platform for industry players to meet, brainstorm and encourage each other to strive for excellence.” Movies made from 2006 to 2009 will be eligible for awards at the first event. Renowned players in the movie industry including Kwaw Ansah, George Williams, David Dontoh and Mohammed Gado are among personalities to make initial selections before they are advertised for the public to take part in final selections via voting.
