Students of Fijai Senior High School’s Visual Arts programme are expected to benefit from improved access to digital learning resources following the handover of a fully equipped computer laboratory by the school’s Old Students Association (FOSA) Visual Arts Class of 2006.

The facility was handed over on Friday, August 21, 2026, as part of the year group’s efforts to support the development of its alma mater and enhance teaching and learning.

Vice-President of the FOSA Visual Arts Class of 2006, Richard Abbam-Berchie, said the project was inspired by the group’s desire to give back to the institution that had played a significant role in shaping its members academically and personally.

He explained that Fijai SHS had equipped members of the year group with academic knowledge while instilling in them values such as discipline, self-awareness, responsibility and preparedness for the future.

Mr Abbam-Berchie said the computer laboratory was intended to strengthen the teaching and learning of 21st-century skills, particularly digital literacy, among students.

Beyond the computer laboratory, the alumni group has undertaken several initiatives aimed at improving the school’s facilities, supporting students’ development and recognising the contributions of teachers.

These include the renovation and upgrading of the Visual Arts Department to improve the learning environment for students pursuing the programme.

The group has also introduced a career and mentorship programme to help students gain guidance and insights into career opportunities and future professional pathways.

As part of its commitment to student welfare, the year group supported menstrual hygiene and health education through Inspire to Rise, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), to promote awareness and provide education on menstrual health.

The initiatives also include teachers’ appreciation and recognition activities to honour educators for their dedication and service, as well as student recognition and awards to celebrate achievement and encourage excellence.

In addition to these projects, the alumni group installed a lighting system stretching from the school gate to the main entrance to improve visibility at night and enhance the safety and security of students and teachers.

The Member of Parliament for the Sekondi Constituency, Armah Blay Nyameke, commended the group for its contributions to the school’s development.

He urged other alumni groups in the constituency and across the Western Region to emulate the gesture by investing in their former schools.

According to him, stronger partnerships between alumni and educational institutions could complement government efforts to address infrastructure gaps and other educational needs while expanding opportunities for young people.

The Headmaster of Fijai SHS, Kenneth Agbomadzi, also expressed appreciation to the FOSA Visual Arts Class of 2006 for supporting the school.

As part of the handover ceremony, some long-serving teachers were honoured for their dedication and contributions to the education and development of students over the years.

They received plaques and cash awards in recognition of their service.

The initiatives reflect the alumni group’s broader commitment to strengthening the school’s learning environment, supporting student welfare and development, and recognising the teachers who continue to shape the lives of learners.
