It was all glitz and glamour when Gupado and Marhills Productions joined the recent movie premiering spree that has engulfed the nation with the release of its latest and hot movie, Shakira, at the National Theatre in Accra. Last Saturday’s premiere was greeted with a lot of excitement as the auditorium of the National Theatre was not only filled to capacity, but sporadically got shrouded with large roars from enthusiastic movie fans, in perhaps their endorsement of the movie. Lead actress and Nollywood’s ‘miss sexy’, Mercy Johnson, who played the title character Shakira surprised fans when she and Majid Michel, the lead male actor, got entangled in some hot love scenes. Most of the scenes in the movie were sexually provoking. Any movement by Mercy Johnson during the night was accorded a lot of cheers from the crowd especially when the actress sat beside Majid Michel in the Theatre and when she was invited on stage. She was indeed the center of attention at the premiere. Many Ghanaian TV personalities and fellow actors walked up to her seat to congratulate her for the role she played. BEATWAVES gathered that Ghana’s ‘queens’ of the screens Nadia Buari and Jackie Appiah had been approached for the role of Shakira, but they rejected it because “it was too hot for their liking as they wondered what Ghanaians would say if they do it, since it has not been the trend of Ghanaian movies.” Hundreds of fans swarmed the National Theatre not to only see the movie but to also have photo opportunities with Mercy Johnson and other Ghanaian showbiz personalities. Local stars who graced the occasion included Kofi Adjorlolo, Luckie Lawson, Eddie Nartey, Prince Dave Osei, Martha Ankomah, Rose Ngissah, Emmanuel Amarh, Eve Asare, John Dumelo and Omar De 1st among a host of others. Fans also enjoyed engaging performances from Slim Buster along with his dance machinery and hiplife trio Runner. The first and second floors of the National Theatre were totally packed, with only the third floor being left with a few empty seats. Men and women, boys and girls of the industry all showed up for the occasion. For the ladies, as usual, it was another opportunity to show off their short skirts and low-cut tops and dresses.
