The President of the Ghana Academy of Sciences, Prof. Reginald Frazer Amonoo, says Ghanaians must accept the fact that English Language has come to stay and must therefore make conscious effort to learn to speak and write the language well.
He said the current situation where less and less people were able to speak English Language fluently is worrying.
Prof. Amonoo was speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show hosted by Evans Mensah on the subject of the falling standards of English Language in the country’s schools.
He said when he was a student at the University of Ghana decades ago, speaking English Language fluently came with pride and people were encouraged to learn the language.
Prof. Amonoo however expressed regret that when he later went back to the university to work, he realised quite disturbingly that students of the university were speaking broken English.
“I think it is a disgrace to hear University of Ghana students – that is where I have been working for the past 50 years – speaking broken English,” he lamented.
He reminded Ghanaians that English was spoken widely in the world and the earlier they accepted the fact that they need the language, the better it would be for them.
“Anybody who has a good command in English has got a flying start over the person who is only competent in the vernaculars,” Prof. Amonoo asserted.
Prof. Amonoo, who also taught French at the University of Ghana emphasized that most of the people who have made significant contributions to the country’s political history and development have wielded considerable proficiency in the English Language.
