The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has expressed support for the reversal to three years senior high school duration.
The association believes priority attention must be given to improving education through the provision of facilities.
GNAT President Joseph Adjei said government must immediately look at providing and upgrading facilities such as laboratories, libraries and classrooms. These, he said, are prerequisites for quality senior high education in the country.
“All that the country needs now is quality. The question of duration is not so critical,” he stressed.
The Kufuor administration increased the duration for senior high education to four years after a series of consultations with stakeholders in the education sector, including parents.
Although the Anamoah Mensah committee charged to research into the programme and propose an appropriate duration authored a three-year system for government then, that was not implemented.
But Education Minister Alex Tetteh-Enyo in an earlier interview with Joy FM said the current government would run a three-year system, citing paucity of facilities in some of the schools.
The minister said an education forum organised by government on assumption of power gave the strongest support for a three-year programme, hence the latest move.
According to the minister, the pack of students who enrolled in 2007 and 2008 would have to complete a four-year programme while 2009 entrants would pursue a three-year course “with a revised syllabus.”
