The government has launched a scholarship scheme for brilliant but needy students who choose to study Mathematics, Science and Technology. The scholarship package is to whip up interest in the study of those subject areas which government says are critical to the development of the country. About 41,400 students are expected to benefit from the package this year. Two per cent of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) proceeds will be used to sponsor the students. Disclosing this, the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Ms Sherry Aryitey said the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science was declining at an alarming rate. She attributed the situation to lack of motivation for teachers and the perception of students and pupils that the two subjects are difficult to study. Ms Aryitey said the scholarship would motivate both teachers and students to pay attention to the critical areas. She said teaching and learning materials would also be made available to facilitate the teaching and learning of the subjects. Story by Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
