Communications Minister Haruna Iddrisu has advocated for a more concerted approach in fighting the insurgence of cyber crime in the country.
According to him, specialized courts would have to be instituted with judges taken through specialized training in order to dispense justice on cyber-related crimes.
His suggestions come in the wake of news that Ghana has been black-listed on several electronic transaction platforms after being ranked the 7th topmost cyber fraud nation in the world, behind countries like the US, Britain and Nigeria.
In an interview with Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah on Wednesday, the minister stressed “sound legal measures must be taken to address the problem.”
He said Ghana does not deserve to be ranked in the first 10 of cyber fraud prone nations in the world.
The Minister hinted that a request will be made of the Chief Justice to factor in the creation of a cyber court as well new anti cyber fraud regimes in the country’s legal process.
Even more worrying, he said, is the fact that the fraudsters have built a network within the financial sector who they connive with to carry out their nefarious activities, stating unequivocally that government “will deal ruthlessly with anyone caught in the act.”
He gave the assurance that government will strengthen the law enforcement agencies to clamp down on the fraudsters, while building international cooperation with other relevant international bodies.
Internet Service Providers, he said, are also encouraged to help monitor internet usage and prevent its employment for fraudulent and illegal use, such as child pornography.
