Success has many fathers, and Empire's alleged baby daddies are coming out of the woodworks.
Days after a New Jersey woman filed suit against Lee Daniels and Fox, claiming the character of Cookie Lyon is based on her life, Marvin Gaye's son Marvin Gaye III has vowed to file his own suit against the show, saying it was his idea in the first place.
According to TMZ, Gaye registered a treatment with the Writer's Guild of America in 2010 for a show he billed as a music-based Black Dynasty, with a bit of Sopranos mixed in. Cut to four years later, and Empire is a ratings smash.
“We understand that three things can’t be hidden for long: the Sun, the Moon and the Truth!” he told the show, likely feeling confident about his chances in court, after his family won a huge judgment against Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams over their hit "Blurred Lines."
Gaye says he pitched the show to several people with ties to Daniels.
Of course, he may have to get in line behind William Shakespeare for credit.
Empire co-creator Danny Strong has been vocal about the fact that the series is based on the Bard's King Lear.
