There has beeb a temporary halt of academic activity at the Archbishop Porter Girls High School following a food poisoning incident on Wednesday. School authorities say some students have been allowed to go home on the insistence of their parents for further medical tests. In a report filed by Joy News correspondent Kwaku Owusu Peprah, not even the symbolic eating of dinner with students by the Western Region Education authorities deterred parents. For now, almost half of the student population is out of campus and regular academic work is expected to resume by Tuesday, 16 February, 2010. Officials of the Food and Drugs Board (FDB) have taken samples of the meal for investigation. The board has meanwhile directed that the school’s current food stock should not be touched until investigations are complete. The Ghana Education Service (GES) is said to be enforcing the directive whilst a thorough cleaning exercise of the school has already begun. Fresh foodstuffs are being supplied, Nana Mbeah said. Meanwhile, health authorities say it will take up to a week before they can confidently determine what exactly led to the mass hospitalization of the students. Several scores of girls were rushed to the Effia Nkwanta Hospital on Wednesday and many others were attended to by doctors on campus, complaining of diarrhoea. Western Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Linda Van-Otoo, said health officials are still on standby attending to the students. Source: Joy News/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
