President John Evans Atta Mills Monday left for Nigeria to attend the 37th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS. The 37th Ordinary Session will open on Tuesday with the major highlight being the handing over by Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas to a new President of the ECOWAS Commission. Other important items on the agenda include deliberations on the situation in Niger and Guinea and the election of a new Chair of ECOWAS. On the sidelines of the conference, the president met with the Acting Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan who paid a courtesy call on President Mills at his hotel to welcome him to Nigeria and convey to him arrangements for the ECOWAS Session. President Mills took the opportunity to wish President Umaru Yar’Adua a speedy recovery. He extended a message of goodwill from the Ghanaian people to the Acting Nigerian President and assured him of Ghana’s continuous support. The President also met the President of the ECOWAS Commission Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas. Their talks centered on strengthening regional integration, trade and how Ghana can deepen its leadership role in the sub-region. Dr. Ibn Chambas took the opportunity to thank President Mills and Ghanaians for the support he received during his tenure as President of the ECOWAS Commission and the unflinching assistance Ghana gave his successful bid to head the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Nations.
