A Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree holder in Mathematics who attempted to impersonate a General Business Certificate Examination (GBCE) candidate created a scene at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Exams Centre in Kumasi on Thursday.
Daniel Boateng, for years a tutor at the Obuasi Secondary Technical School, stunned candidates and invigilators in the hall midway through the Business Mathematics paper when he took to his heels during the picture identification exercise.
But he was picked later when the candidate he was impersonating, Fred Obeng, led the police to his hideout in Obuasi.
Boateng was behind bars at the police post located at the WAEC offices in Kumasi at the time of going to press.
Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Kumasi Controller of WAEC, Mr John Amidini, said Boateng registered for the examination under the name Francis Obeng. His index number was 025190158.
Fred, the other candidate, who claimed to be an employee of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), also had the index number 025190151.
They were both writing the paper at the same examination centre at the WAEC office in Kumasi.
Mr. Amidini stated that the two candidates swapped seats at the examination centre and in a bid to outwit examination officials, Boateng wrote Fred's index number on his answer paper while Fred wrote Boateng's index number on his.
He said when officials were doing picture identification, they first got to Fred and realised that he was not the one who was supposed to use that seat.
When he was questioned, he could not give any tangible answer. Following that, a search was conducted on him which revealed a mobile phone hidden in his socks, in clear contravention of examination regulations.
Mr Amidini indicated that Boateng might have sensed danger then and asked permission to go out to urinate.
Unknown to the invigilator who was accompanying him to the urinal, Boateng had planned to escape and so he took flight.
The controller stated that Fred was asked to assist in arresting Boateng and he led the police and WAEC officials to Obuasi where Boateng was picked at dawn.
Police investigations are continuing.
