The 2010 Basic Education Certificate Examination of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) takes off on Monday, April 19 throughout the country with 350,088 (Three hundred and fifty thousand, eight hundred and eighty-eight) registered candidates. The candidates, 191,390 males and 159,498 females from Junior High Schools across the country will begin the week-long examinations with English Language and close with French. Two subjects- ICT and Religious and Moral Education have been excluded from the exams after the government withdrew them from the list of examinable subjects. Public Relations Officer of WAEC, Agnes Teye-Cudjoe who wished candidates well told Myjoyonline.com that all is set for the examination that serves both as certification and selection to Senior Secondary Schools and Technical Institutes. At the Ave Maria School at Dansoman in the Ablekuma South Constituency of Accra, school authorities are confident they have prepared the students adequately for the examinations. The proprietor, Mr. Michael Safo Antwi, told Myjoyonline.com that while the school focus on the holistic development of students, special care is also paid their academic performance so they excel in their examinations and progress into Senior High Schools. “We pride ourselves in being a ‘Citadel of Academic Excellence’ as our motto avers and we go the extra mile to ensure our students complete their programmes well – conscious of the environment, strong mentally and confident physically, and above all they fit effortlessly into the society. As an added incentive to excel in the 2010 BECE examinations, the school is housing all the candidates in the boarding facility to give them the need conditions to concentrate on their studies.
