Seven airports in Spain have been forced to close because of a cloud of volcanic ash drifting from Iceland.
Four airports in the Canary Islands and three in southern Spain closed, Spain's air traffic control agency Aena said.
Morocco has also closed several airports for most of the morning, including Casablanca and Rabat.
The ash-affected area is expected to move towards south-eastern France later in the day, European air traffic agency Eurocontrol has said.
The agency said it expected 29,000 flights to take to the air on Tuesday, which was close to normal for this time of year.
On Monday, there were 29,155 flights.
Restrictions
In the Canaries, both airports on Tenerife and those on La Palma and La Gomera suspended operations at 0500 (0400 GMT).
Seville, Jerez and Badajoz airports shut down one hour later.
On Monday, restrictions were placed on flying through Spanish airspace, but there were no airport closures.
These restrictions continue on Tuesday for planes flying between 20,000ft (6,000m) and 35,000ft (10,500m), mainly affecting trans-Atlantic flights, Aena said.
Some 19 airports in the north of the country were closed at the weekend.
In Morocco, the airports in Tangier, Tetouan and Essaouira - as well as the airports in Casablanca and Rabat - have been closed for most of the morning.
Until now, the ash had only affected European airports.
