At least five people have been killed and over fifty injured as multiple tornadoes whipped through the American state of Oklahoma. House roofs were ripped off, cars flipped over and and areas lashed by hailstones the size of baseballs as violent storms tore through the state. Oklahoma Emergency Management confirmed two people were killed in Oklahoma City. Officials said the the deaths involved a young boy who was hit by debris in his home and a man whose car flipped over on top of him. A further three people were killed in Cleveland County. Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett said: "This was a significant storm and a deadly storm." Officials reported that at least 58 others suffered injuries throughout Oklahoma during the storms on Monday. A spokesman for Norman Hospital, said eight people had been admitted with crush injuries and head trauma and were in a critical condition. Norman resident Jamie Keyes was trapped in a closet with her family as the tornadoes hit her home. "The kids and I got in the closet and prayed," said Jamie Keyes. "I heard a hiss. It was like something was whistling very loud," she said. "We're all very fortunate." Oklahoma City Fire Chief Keith Bryant said rescuers were continuing to search a 30-square-mile area for survivors and clear power lines ripped up by the storms. Oklahoma City Police confirmed the storms had destroyed at least 40 homes and damaged a further 40. More than 31,000 homes were without power in the metro Oklahoma City area, nearly 15,000 in Norman alone, according to Oklahoma Gas & Electric. The American Red Cross opened at least two shelters in McCloud, Oklahoma, and Tecumseh, Oklahoma while officials continue to assess the extent of the damage. In Alfalfa County, Sheriff Charlie Tucker said hail as big as baseballs smashed cars windscreens and pummeled homes. One man, Sammy Ward, took cover in his truck with a friend as the storm hit. He said: "It started hailing and then it quit hailing and then all of a sudden the wind hit and it just went dark." "Trucks went to rocking...and next thing we know the whole roof and everything was gone." Other tornadoes were reported in Yukon, Medford and Shawnee in Oklahoma, and in Wichita, Kansas. The Storm Prediction Center at Norman had forecast the storms, saying the atmosphere had the right mix of winds, heat and moisture. But the ferocity and number of tornadoes seem to have taken everyone by surprise. Oklahoma has one of the highest rates of tornado strikes in the world, with an average of 52 tornadoes a year.
