An economist Dr Nii Moi Thompson says the recent ban on the use of mobile phones in the Senior High Schools is unnecessary.
Instead of an outright ban, Dr Thompson told Joy News’ Moses Kangah the use of the mobile phones must rather be regulated.
Students of Ghana Senior High School in the Northern Region over the weekend went on a demolishing spree in protest of what they claim was the indiscriminate seizure of their phones by the authorities.
The school has subsequently been closed down.
Consequently, the Ghana Education Service has called for the strict enforcement of the ban.
But Dr Nii Moi Thompson said the ban is to “stand in the way of technology”.
He argued mobile phones are beneficial, sometimes in fighting crimes and an outright ban will not inure to the benefit of the society.
Dr Thompson debunked assertion that the use of mobile phones could engender immorality among students.
But the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service Charles Parker Allotey says the argument of Dr Thompson is unacceptable.
He argued mobile phones serve only as a distraction not only to the students but the teachers as well.
According to him, the students stay awake chatting the night away with friends on the mobile phone only to come to the classroom during the day to sleep.
He said it will be difficult to regulate the use of the mobile phone, insisting an outright ban is the way forward.
