The President of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Mr Evangel Adu-Boadu, has condemned the lavish spending by some students who aspire to hold political offices on campus. The president who was speaking to Atta Kusi Adusei on ‘Community Watch’, a news review programme on Focus FM stated that the act leads to students trying to recoup these monies later from the coffers of the various organizations after being elected into office. The interview came on the backdrop of escalating extravagant spending by student politicians in tertiary institutions. He indicated that this was done normally by those contesting for positions in the Student Representative Council (SRC) of the universities and he thought it was unwarranted. On the legacy he wished to leave, he emphasized that a leadership of accountability, trust and sincerity are what he would like to leave when he completed his term of office. He made it known that “leaders in our country and various educational institutions do not see to the basic needs of the people in areas of infrastructure”. The GRASAG president emphasized that with the help of the incoming Vice Chancellor, Prof. W.O. Ellis, the problem of infrastructure would be tackled. Mr. Adu-Boadu commended his predecessors for the provision of furniture in the secretariat and computer rooms. He further praised them for finalizing negotiations with the Dean of Distance Learning Department of the School of Graduate Studies to include GRASAG dues in the fees to help generate funds to finance projects outlined by the association.
