The Principal of Saint Monica’s College of Education in Asante-Mampong, Mrs Christiana Sobotie, has appealed to the government to do more to promote science and technology education.
She said everything should be done to create the right conditions in schools to make the teaching and learning of science and technology attractive.
Mrs Sobotie was opening a Summer Camp for 280 girls from 28 Girls Senior High School (SHS) from across the country at the Asante-Mampong Saint Monica’s SHS.
The students had gathered with the heads of their schools for the purpose of preparing and encouraging the young girls to take to the study of the sciences.
The theme for this year’s camp is “The girl child and science education, challenges and the way forward.”
Mrs Sobotie urged girls to shed off the “science phobia” and develop the self-confidence to break into the male-dominated field.
She said this was necessary to help transform the situation of the Ghanaian woman.
She appealed for scholarship awards for girls pursuing science and technology education, especially at the tertiary level to help empower them to build on their creative skills.
Mrs Sylvia Asempa, the Headmistress of Aburi Girls SHS, commended former Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) Administrator, Mr Fosuaba Bannerhene, for initiating the Summer Camp programme.
