Some residents of Tema Community 3 are demanding the suspension of work on a warehouse being constructed in the community.
According to the aggrieved residents, the location of the project which is rumoured to be a cement warehouse is inappropriate because of its proximity to the Sakumono Lagoon Ramsar site.
Residents have raised several questions about the project that started in November 2014 which have not been answered and work is continuing.
Not only is the project a nuisance, residents say its location on a wetland is problematic.

Joy News’ Matilda Wemegah was in the community and reports that residents are unhappy about the project.
The residents have given the Tema Development Corporation and the Tema Metropolitan Assembly an ultimatum to revoke the permits of face their wrath.
One resident questioned why the real purpose of the project was not revealed to the residents from the outset.
“The issue is that, from the beginning they failed to consult, they’ve hidden the motive of the project from us for all this while so we don’t even want to believe anything they tell us now because if they have anything to tell us they should have done that long ago.”
“I am a planner and I know that if you want to do a project like this the first thing to do is contact the community, put up a billboard indicating the nature of the project, who the clients are and who the consultants are so that everyone will know. If they find out that the location of the project is not right they can raise an alarm but they didn’t do that so it means they have something to hide,” he stressed.

Another resident said she just wants the project taken away from the area, adding, “It is not appropriate.”
Although the Tema Development Corporation admitted to issuing the permit for the project, they refused to comment when Joy News contacted them.
Senior Programmes Officer at the Tema EPA, Hope Lomotey, confirmed the Agency has received a petition from the residents and is looking into it but declined any further comment.
