Sky has announced a new 3D TV deal with the Korean manufacturer LG during the IFA technology fair in Berlin.
LG, who have supplied the televisions for the experimental 3D coverage of football in thousands in pubs around the UK, are now to be Sky's "first choice" supplier of 3D sets for the home.
Speaking after the announcment, Stephen Gater from LG said: “Making 3D technology a genuine reality in people’s homes relies on the pairing of great hardware and compelling content. Our partnership with Sky recognises just this.”
Hilary Perchard from Sky said of the partnership: “We believe in giving customers choice and as the only manufacturer so far committed to both active and passive TVs, we believe LG has the breadth of product to offer a 3D TV experience for all Sky customers.”
There has been some confusion over the two rival 3D TV display techniques.
One system uses passive technology with the viewer wearing polarised glasses like those used in cinemas to see the 3D image.
An alternative system uses electronic "shutter" glasses that switch on and off in sync with the tv display.
Sky's 3D Sky+ box works with both systems.
On October 1 Sky launches Sky 3D in the UK and Ireland, Europe's first dedicated 3D TV channel, showing sports, films, documentaries and entertainment shows.
