A Modern Examination and Lecturers office complex has been inaugurated at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.
The complex, a three storey building, has an examination hall with about 900 seating capacity and offices for 48 lecturers.
The project is part of the infrastructure development of the university and is also expected to ease the problems associated with inadequate examination halls at the university.
It was jointly funded from the GETFund, the Institute of Distant Learning and internally generated funds.
The inauguration ceremony also coincided with the that of a Cafeteria to provide affordable food at the campus.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Prof. K.K. Adarkwah, outgoing Vice Chancellor of the university, said over the years, the various departments and faculties have had to acquire offices for lecturers because the university had not put in place any plans to get offices for them.
He emphasised that lecturers needed a conducive office accommodation for vigorous research and academic work.
He said the increasing number of lecturers as a result of the expansion drive resulted in some of the lecturers cramming together in small offices and on corridors.
Prof. Adarkwah pointed out that this problem really had a toll on the level of effectiveness of lecturers.
He said the construction of the complex would also ease the problems of finding enough space and rooms for students during the examination period and further put an end to the practice where chairs and tables had to be hired for examination.
Prof. Adarkwa, commended the contractor, Berock Ventures Limited for a job well done.
Mr Courage K. Dorgbegoh, Deputy Director of Berock Ventures Limited, said the building had been fixed with a number of modern facilities including Close Circuit Television to check examination malpractice and other negative practices that undermines teaching and learning at the university.
