Information available to Asempa News indicates that two female final year students of Adonteng Senior High School at Aburi in the Eastern region have been asked to buy five bags of cement each, or else risk expulsion. They are being punished for flouting school rules and regulations. According a cement dealer at Aburi one Richard Appiah, the two students borrowed monies from some people before they were able to buy the cement on Wednesday. He suspected that the students might have collected the money from their boy friends. Asempa News’ Michael Oppong was at the school to verify the authenticity of the story, and reports that the school authorities said they held a meeting with the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) in July where the decision was taken. The Assistant Headmaster of the School, Kofi Mensah, explained that there is a punishment for every offence committed in the school endorsed by the parents, stressing the parents are very much aware that their stubborn wards may fall victim to “the cement buying” punishment. However some members of the public as well as parents who have wards in Adonteng Senior Secondary School have kicked against the decision of the school to ask students to purchase bags of cement as a means of punishment. They claimed the punishment was too harsh since students are not workers and do not have that amount of money to buy cement. In a related development, an angry parent, who spoke on condition of anonymity, called into Asempa newsroom, also alleged that authorities of Suhum Technical School (SUTESCO) compel parents of recalcitrant students to buy between 10 and 20 bags of cements as punishment. This practice according to the parent has gone on for at least two years. Efforts by Asempa News to contact authorities of the school were futile. Meanwhile the Public Relation Officer of Ghana Education Service (GES), Charles Parker Allotey in an interview with ASEMPA NEWS condemned the punishment adding the GES is not aware.
