Mrs Irene Duncan Adanusa, General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), has indicated that education is the soul of every developed nation with the teacher as the agent of recovery. He said teachers should therefore pursue the necessary qualification to move from one level to the other in the Ghana Education Service (GES) in order to witness the needed recovery. Addressing this year’s awards night of GNAT in Koforidua, which forms part of the World Teachers Day, and falls on October 5 each year, Mrs Duncan- Adanusa urged teachers to see themselves as valuable specialists by organising their work and avoid waste of time and energy. The GNAT General Secretary expressed concern about the poor condition of teachers in the country over the years, which she described as “not motivating”. She however appealed to her colleagues not to be demoralised but strive to put in their best. Mrs Duncan-Adanusa said teachers salaries should compare favourably with salaries paid in other occupations requiring similar or equivalent qualifications. She suggested the need for the educational authorities in consultation with teachers’ organisations to promote the establishment of a wide system of in-service education free to all teachers. She said such a system should provide a variety of arrangements and involve the participation of Teacher Preparatory Institutions as well as Teachers Organisation, Scientific and Cultural Institutions. Forty-seven people who have served the association in diverse ways, some on retirement were rewarded. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview on the significance of the celebration of World Teachers Day, the New Juaben Municipal Secretary of GNAT, Mr George Aboagye, said it was in recognition of teachers’ contributions to socio-economic development.
