Education Minister Alex Tettey-Enyo has dismissed claims that the country is suffering an educational crisis. The country has over the past few weeks been riddled with agitations by lecturers at the tertiary level, with members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana and the Polytechnic Teachers of Ghana laying down their tools. At the Senior High School level, parents and headteachers alike are going through torrid times housing fresh students. The opposition New Patriotic Party has been quick and uncharitable in their description of the challenges in the education sector as a crisis situation. But speaking to Joy News’ Elvis Adjetey, the Education Minister insisted that his ministry is not in crisis, rather what he sees are challenges in the sector, challenges which are being addressed. When Adjetey posed a direct question as to whether the education ministry is in crisis, the Minister was blunt. “We don’t. We don’t. Admission in schools where we don’t have adequate facilities has been with us all over the years. We take steps early to forestall. This time it is so colossal and we are dealing with it,” he said. According to him, the government is solving the industrial unrest in the educational sector. “In terms of salary, we have circles of grievances. Happily parties involved are understanding the situation and therefore we are resolving those problems.” He was convinced that the government will solve the problems no matter how long it takes.
