For ensuring that candidates did not cheat in last year’s maiden West African Senior School Certificate Examination, the life of Ms Anita Jackson, Headmistress of Apeguso Community Secondary School in the Eastern Region has come under threat. According to the Ghanaian Times, the vigilant Headmistress caught some candidates cheating during the examination and reported their conduct to the West African Examinations Council. That incensed the students who have since harassed and threatened her life. Her plight has however received attention from WAEC who conducted investigation into the irregular cases and the misconduct of the candidates. As a first step, WAEC has de-recognised the school as an examination centre for two years and the Council would decide where current final year students will write the May/June 2007 WASSCE. WAEC, also expressed appreciation for the efforts of the headmistress and commended her commitment to duty and the exemplary leadership qualities exhibited during the examination. This was contained in a letter addressed to the acting GES Director General dated November 2006 and signed by Mrs Diana Ammisah Ocran, Head of Test Administration Division of WAEC. The letter headed “May/June 2006 West African Senior School Certificate Examination-Plea for transfer , “stated; “The 19th Meeting of the Final Awards Examiners’ Appointment Committee for the Senior School Certificate Examination of the West African Examination Council that considered irregularity cases in connection with the May/June 2006 WASSCE decided to commend the headmistress of Apeguso Community Secondary School for their commitment to duty”. The Committee, however expressed concern about her safety in the community and therefore appealed to the acting Director General to transfer her from the community. When contacted, the acting GES Director General, Michael Nsowah confirmed receiving the appeal from WAEC and said the headmistress, Ms Jackson was being transferred to the Kwahu Ridge Secondary School.
