The National Association of Graduate Teachers says it is unhappy at the pace with which the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) are working to move them onto the Single Spine Salary Structure. In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by NAGRAT President Christian Addai-Poku, the association said per the roadmap agreed upon by the FWSC and organised labour, workers within the GES are expected to be moved onto the SSSS by the end of December but the delay has been due to some concerns raised by the unions. “NAGRAT is gravely concerned at the pace at which negotiations towards resolving the outstanding issues are moving,” the statement said, adding that “the frequent postponement of meetings scheduled to resolve issues and the lack of urgency with which GES and FWSC have been handling the issue gives us enough grounds to fear that we may be rushed on to the SSSS in December as originally scheduled.” The teachers expressed worry at rumours that some Bretton Woods institutions are pushing the government to either cease forthwith the implementation of the Single Spine Pay Policy (SSPP) or to whittle down the wage bill and the alleged intension of the government to postpone further implementation of the SSPP. “NAGRAT is happy the Deputy Minister of Finance subsequently came out to deny the claims but we have enough reason to believe that the FWSC has not been treating our grievances with the urgency it deserves,” the statement emphasised. “NAGRAT will want to state clearly that come December, if teachers are not satisfactorily moved onto the SSSS there will be no compromise whatsoever. We still have time to act now rather than to allow things to escalate before thinking of adhoc measures.” The statement added that “teachers will expect Ghanaians to judge well should it happen in December.” By: Dorcas Efe Mensah/myjoyonline.com/Ghana
