The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) on Wednesday distributed 2,000 pieces of free school uniforms to brilliant but needy pupils in some selected schools in the metropolis.
This was in fulfillment of the election campaign pledge made by President John Evans Atta Mills.
Mr Samuel Sarpong, Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), speaking at the presentation ceremony, said the government would create the right environment for teaching and learning as well as lessen the school financing burden on parents.
He said it was on account of this that schools' infrastructure are being improved, capitation grant raised and the school feeding programme enhanced.
Mr Sarpong advised the children to avoid bad company and truancy in order to grow into responsible adults.
"You should also bear in mind that you owe a duty to your parents, teachers and your community to be obedient to school rules and regulations so that you can become responsible in future."
The MCE, additionally, counseled them to be more serious with their studies.
Mr Sarpong also encouraged teachers to serve as role model to the pupils as they encourage them to cherish the values of hard work, discipline and respect for those in authority.
Mr Joseph Kwabena Onyinah, the Ashanti Regional Education Director, was grateful to the government for the support given to the needy children.
Mr Godfred Boakye of the Metropolitan Education Directorate, appealed for the construction of more classrooms to create space for the increasing school population.
Mr Thomas Ekow Sackey, Assemblyman for Asem in Kumasi, appealed to parents to compliment government's efforts by providing the children with their basic needs.
The beneficiaries were from Akorem, Aboabo, Keneako, Asawasi, Asem, Nwomase, Awere, Yaa Asantewaa and Ayigya Sakafia basic schools.
