The Minister of Communications, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, has said there is the need for co-location of masts by Telecommunication Service operators and other players in the industry to reduce the proliferation of masts in the country. “Co-location is mandatory and it would create a better situation for all the stakeholders in the industry”, he explained. Mr Iddrisu said this at a day’s workshop organized by the Ministry of Communications with the collaboration of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) on Electromagnetic Fields Exposure and Health in the Western Region. The workshop brought together participants from the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, the media, National Disaster Management Organization, Environmental Protection Agency and other stakeholders in the industry to deepen their understanding of the exposure to radiation and its health implications. On his part, the Western Regional Minister, Mr Paul Evans Aidoo, said the growing demand for voice and data service in the country had resulted in a corresponding expansion of the existing telecom networks. “This, therefore, requires the development of base stations which include the erection of towers for meeting coverage and capacity requirements”. Mr Aidoo urged regulatory authorities to enforce the provision in the guidelines to help sanitize the landscape.
