The former head of the Catholic diocese in the Kumasi Metropolitan area, Emeritus Most Rev. Peter Akwasi Sarpong has added his voice to the growing debate of Ghana's secondary education by stating that the country needs to return to the former A-level education.
According to the former Catholic head, the sixth form secondary education produced much better and mature students than the current system, and opined that the current system produced half-baked graduates.
The Catholic Reverend questioned why senior secondary education should have a three-year tenure while university education had four.
He said he was in support of the 4-year system initiated by the previous regime and would have preferred it remain that way instead of the reversion to the 3-year system.
"From the primary school through JSS, [it] makes it unrealistic to have a secondary school for four years…and you can see from the results."
"You have graduates who don't know English…Even after the three years, when you go to the university it is four years."
It was therefore his wish that government would listen to his plea in the interest of Ghana's youth.
